[On Your Own] Percentages in News Reports (18 April 2022) "same same yet different" 🤔

On 18 April 2022, major news agencies reported that Singapore Airlines has made big jumps in terms of the passengers load, compared to last year's performance (2021).

Percentages and Percentage Points were used widely in the reporting.

For ease of comparison/ reading, you may open the websites side-by-side for comparison.

One interesting fact is, one of the articles reported the two airlines (SIA and Scoot) carried 790 percent more passengers in March compared to a year ago. Read more about this piece of "fact" from both news articles.
  • Is there any "discrepancy" in the reporting?
  • Is there any recommendation if you have a say in the way the figures are reported?
There's an opportunity for the CNA to report another figure in percentage that would probably help the reader to understand the growth of passenger load better.
  • Can you identify that? What's that information when expressed in percentage?
Percentage point is used in one of the articles.
  • Do you understand what it means?
