[Bite Size] Inequalities: an Introduction

(A) WARMING UP (approx 5min)

Short Quiz
Read up study notes page 21 to p24

Meaningful Equations: Some formulae (in advance)

Have you ever wonder how some of these formulae are derived or how to verify some of them?

1. The Pythagoras Theorem

There are 2 clips that's shared during the lesson relating to the Pythagoras' Theorem:

2. Area of Trapezium

Do you know, we can derive the formula for the area of a Trapezium using area of triangle and factorisation?

3. Surface area of a sphere

Do you know that the Surface Area of a Sphere is related to the area of circles?

[Group Discussion] Factorisation Pyramid Challenge

This was carried out during lesson on 1 August 2022 (approx 20min).

The challenge is to recognise "characteristics" of the given expression and apply the appropriate factorisation method(s) to factorise the expression completely.

On the whole:
  • Group A 3 points
  • Group B 7 points
  • Group C 7 points
  • Group D 12 points 👏 🏆 (winner as submitted on 1 Aug)
  • Group E 10 points 👏
  • Group F 12 points 👏
  • Group G 9 points

[Warming Up] Algebra... after a break...

Today, we revisited the following (after a short break to focus on Data Handling):

  • HW4abc (selected questions): Expansion, Factorisation
  • Warming up Worksheet - Page 1 - The focus was factorisation with common factors
Here's the answers (in case some of you did not 'catch' it)
Please be prepared for (page 2)

Note: Answers for HW4abc can be found in the Homework Post in Google Classroom.

Introduction: Data Handling - Statistical Investigation

Some new words/ phrases are introduced during the lesson:

  • Data points, Sample Size (n ≥ 30)
  • Raw data
  • Respondents/ Participants
  • Survey (as an action/ process or an instrument to collect information)
  • Mean, Mode, Median
  • Frequency Table, Tally

Looking at numbers, statistics from another perspective: Information VS misinformation

[Resource] Factorisation by Special Products

The following clip shows how to factorise quadratic expressions that could be 'derived' from the special Algebraic Identities (or we call them "Special Products" here).

Our focus would be the product of the difference, i.e. (A + B)(A - B) = A^2 - B^2

[Group Work] Algebra Factorisation - Special Product (A+B)(A-B)

To be completed by end of Today.
You will need to refer to the feedback for the weekly HW this week

Instructions:
ALL group members will complete the collections assigned.

Insert Your Name and REMEMBER to label the Question clearly.
e.g. 1A for collection 1, type A
  • Collection 1: Groups A & E
  • Collection 2: Groups B & F
  • Collection 3: Groups C & G
  • Collection 4: Groups D & H
  • Collection 5: Groups A, D, G
  • Collection 6: Groups B, E, H

[Updated on 4 July]

Example (A3)

Example (B2)
The following presents 2 "approaches" to simplify the algebraic fractions.
Preferred: Method 1, where we simplify the numerator (if it's not in the simplified form) before expressing in a single fraction.

Method 1

Method 2
